Reed College's Ren Fayre '99 - MEAT SMOKE

Page 1 2
Quotations by Jim Quinn, Bear Wilner, and Andy McLain, excerpted from the Reed Alumni Forum on Utne

"We buried 4 hindquarters of beef and an entire lamb in a big pit fire that burned invisibly underground all night, and hung 16 large turkeys and 7 huge salmon, along with another whole lamb, in a large smoker box"

Jim Quinn is the guy on the far left, and right next to him holding up the video camera is Bear's friend Umakatala from Eugene. Roy is facing the wheelbarrow of lamb with Rebecca facing them.

Chris Anderson '82 is squatting down; Robbie Waller is to his right with goggles on his army hat; Bear is behind Robbie with eyes downcast -- the guy in the whitish wool hat with glasses, mustache, and goatee. Uma is in the background with his videocamera.

"It was good. It was real good. In point of fact, it was The Best."

"We marched the steaming meat up to the feast in two wheelbarrows. We were dirty and smelly and rag-tag, but we had the goods, yessir. We fed many people. Because the line was moving more slowly than our carvers, we sent meat out to the people in line on trays. Our offerings were well received."

Bear hoists along with someone off-camera as Andy McLain watches. He's got the shaved head and goatee/mustache same as Bear

A crowd watches as the buried meat is checked... Perfection!

"The serving was epic. See, because the feast relocation was mandated three weeks before RF, Ann Clifton, the Feast Director (who did a great job and earned our respect, both feast-wise and party-wise), didn't have time to plan for all contingencies. The feast was to be held in a field. Then came the rain. "
"Phys Plant helped out a lot with this... and thanks to Commons for being super nice throughout. "

The long feast line

At the head of the feast line were the servers. Roy is in the white T-shirt and glasses, Geoff Lane '96 is back-to-back with him, Andy's partner Rebecca is in the straw hat looking to her left, and Jehnee Rains (?!?) is facing them in the wool hat and glasses.

"And on top of that, we were visted throughout by various and sundry alumni and students."
"All went well, and the Canyon is the cleanest and most peaceful spot on campus right now. So there! "

"The roll call of honor Rob Waller, Bear Wilner, Emily Headen, Liz Eckert -- These people were at the glade 9AM Friday! Rebecca Provorse, Elizabeth Johnson-Kuhn, Susan Bioligist, Justin Miller, Christian Seppa, Jen Waldorf, Carrie Bleiweiss, Dr. Jeff Jehnee Rains, Jim Quinn, Will Morgan, Chris Anderson, DeDee Nugent, Paul Manson, Tye ?, Marty Smith, Rob Mack, Joy ?, Marc Visnic, Darius Rejali Filbert Oh, damn. There are surely people I've forgotten, and certainly some I never really met, especially among our meat carvers. People made myriad contributions..."
